Team Radical West Attends Speed Ventures Track Day at California Speedway

On a hot and sunny summer day in June, members and staff of Team Radical West Racing traveled to California Speedway in Fontana California, to participate in Speed Venture’s latest event.  A record number of Radicals made a showing on the fast and furious California Speedway track.  Team members who were in attendance included John Morris, Roy Sciortino, Glenn Scott, Kirk Clymer, Marc Futterman, Ken Melgoza, Glenn Dulaine, Ken Adelberg, and Todd Waldman.  Radical staff members Marc Brewster, Todd Joyce and David Thompson were also on hand to work with the team, along with Event Coordinator Laura Kunde.   Also enjoying the event were friends and family members of the team.

Speed Ventures organizes track events for street cars and race cars alike, providing a safe, fun environment to learn the limits of your car and improve your driving abilities.  They offer instruction in track-driving technique, optional timing at all events, and an opportunity to affordably live your dream of driving on a real racetrack.

The Radicals were stiff competition for the other cars on the California Speedway racetrack.  John Morris had qualified in pole position for the upcoming Radical race until his Turbocharged SR3 caught on fire on the racetrack!  John quickly exited the vehicle and put out the flames with his fire extinguisher.  The fire grew quickly and John put up a valiant effort with his in-car extinguisher until the flames moved directly beneath the fuel tank.  At that point he thought it best to get out of the way and he waited for the Fire Crew on hand to finish the job.

The race was on….John was out because of the fire, and John Dearing in his Viper was ahead of the pack, with Radicals close behind, in line to pass.  Then, Dearing’s Viper blew a tire on a high-speed curve which caused him to lose control and hit the wall.  Fortunately Dearing came out of the incident with no injuries; however, the car didn’t.  The race was red flagged by the event organizers.  For event results and run times, click here.

The Radical West team members had a memorable experience on the California Speedway track with Speed Ventures participants, and we look forward to attending many more fun Tracquest events in the future.  We would like to thank Aaron Bitterman for planning a great weekend.

Radical West Purchases Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch

On June 15, 2004, Radical’s California-based distributors, Radical West Racing, has closed escrow on the purchase of Spring Mountain Motorsport Park race circuit in Pahrump, Nevada.

The 2.2 mile circuit to be known as “Spring Mountain Motorsport Ranch” is located outside the historic desert town, a mere 45 minute drive from fabulous Las Vegas.

John Morris CEO of Radical West is thrilled about his latest acquisition and explains: “We have always enjoyed driving our Radicals on the well designed and efficiently run Spring Mountain race track. We will continue to run the Corvette Driving School under the new name Spring Mountain Advanced Driving School, formerly known as Bragg-Smith Advanced Driving School.  In addition we hope to be able to announce plans soon regarding a Radical Driving School in the near future.”

Paul Dujon from the Radical factory visited Spring Mountain this weekend and was given a guided tour of the circuit from the passenger seat of both a Radical SR3 and John’s Robinson R44 helicopter.  Paul enthused: “The helicopter ride was a fantastic experience. The circuit looks great from the air and the surrounding Nevada desert and the mountains are breathtaking. But for sheer thrills the passenger ride in the SR3 was fantastic.  John obviously knows the SR3 and the circuit well. I was very impressed!”.

While at the circuit Allan and Lindy Cislini from Scottsdale, Arizona arrived to test an SR3.  Although it was their first experience of a race car on a circuit, they decided to purchase a car and join Team Radical West’s ever growing band of track day arrive and drive customers.

Welcome to the Radical West team, Allan and Lindy!

ARC & Radical West Announce 2004 ARC Radical West Cup

American Racing Club (ARC) and Radical Sportscars West are proud to announce the formation of the 2004 ARC Radical West Cup, set to take place at the 4 remaining ARC events within

California this working for months with Radical West owner John Morris to design a series dedicated for Radical owners and drivers. Allison noted: “Since I first bought my Radical SR3, the best racing I have found has been against other Radical racers. As the ranks of Radicals have continued to grow within the ARC, it only made sense to form an official partnership with John Morris of Radical West to launch a Western U.S. Radical series.”

Based in Southern California, Morris sees the union between the ARC and Radical West as the perfect opportunity to unite Radical owners and drivers on some of the most challenging tracks in the country: “The popularity of Radical Sportscars has just exploded on the West Coast since I opened my dealership; until now, our customers and other Radical racers throughout the West haven´t had a racing organization or home to call their own. We also haven´t had a series where Radical racers can come out, compete for a championship, and test their skills against other Radical drivers. With the ARC Radical West Cup, every Radical now has a home and a championship.”

The 2004 ARC Radical West Cup will be comprised of 10 races at 3 different tracks, plus a season ending Enduro at Thunderhill Raceway in December. The ARC´s unique racing format provides 2 races per day at every event, and the ARC Radical West Cup will run within the existing ARC Formula/Sportscar run-group for 2004. The 2004 series will race at:

          Infineon Raceway, June 20th — 2 races               Thunderhill Raceway, August 7th - 2 races

          Reno-Fernley Raceway, Oct 8-10 - 4 races            Thunderhill Raceway, Dec 11-12 - 2 races, Enduro

The goal for the series is to promote enough growth to allow a dedicated run-group for Radicals only in 2005. For this, Morris noted: “Even as we have been working quietly behind the scenes with the ARC, in the past month I have received numerous inquiries from owners and drivers throughout the

U.S. and

Europe about joining the series. Between the legion of Radical owners in the West and interest from drivers throughout the world that want to race Radicals in

California
, the ARC Radical West Cup is set for an incredible season.”

In addition to the cash prizes given to the top 3 finishers of the 2004 ARC Radical West Cup series, the championship winning driver will also get a generously offered “Radical Drive in Europe” from Radical Sportscars USA. A Radial Sportscar and crew will be provided for use at any Radical Championship race throughout

Europe. Additional 2004 ARC Radical West Cup contingency awards are to be announced.

David Koller Wins SCCA Race in Texas with his NEW Radical SR3

David Koller in his New Radical SR3 at Texas World Speedway

Congratulations are extended to Radical West Racing client David Koller from Houston Texas, who won his first SCCA race in his class driving his brand new Radical SR3 last weekend!   David’s hot yellow Radical SR3 was air freighted from the factory in Peterborough to Houston International Airport.  Time was of the essence as David’s car had landed, had been offloaded and cleared customs just in the nick of time - only one day before qualifications at the Aggienapolos 500 at Texas World Speedway.
Radical West Racing sent expert crew member Todd Joyce down to Houston to assist David with the car for his first event, and we’re proud to announce that he took the podium with a first place win in the CSR Class at the SCCA race.   David was pleased with the Radical SR3 performance and Radical West Racing service, saying, “The car was GREAT and Todd was better.  There was not one bolt, screw, bracket, wire or anything that Todd didn’t check at least three times.  In fact I think he wore out the hood brackets taking off the hood so many times.   If he could come to all my events that would be great, I did not lift a finger all weekend!”
David plans to race in the Houston Regional SCCA events and to participate in other track events in the area.  In addition, we’re hoping to talk David into attending a few track events in California, Nevada and Arizona with the rest of the team.  We’re thrilled about David’s win and look forward to reporting many more exciting accomplishments for all of the members of Team Radical West.   Congratulations David!

Radicals Featured in June 2004 Edition of Automobile Magazine

Team Radical West cars were featured in the June edition of Automobile Magazine, in an article entitled “The Radical Solution.” As the article subtitle reads, “An upstart British racing-car manufacturer provides the ultimate in track-day performance.”   To experience a full-on track-day racing fantasy, some drivers turn to the Radical - a vehicle not available at your local dealership.

Preston Lerner, a contributing Automobile Magazine writer, experienced the Radical first hand and wrote, “On the track, the Radical immediately impresses you with its agility - no surprise, since the SR3 weighs only 1100 pounds.  With four-pot calipers at all four corners and not much mass to stop, deceleration is so abrupt that you’ve got to hurry to get all the downshifts done in the braking zone.  In short, the Radical feels lot like a full-bodied, well-mannered formula car.”

Radical West Racing Attends Private Track Event at Thunderhill Raceway

Radicals line up on the grid on a beautiful morning at Thunderhill

On Wednesday, May 26, 2004, Team Radical West Racing members traveled up north to Thunderhill Raceway to participate in Phillip Holmes’ private track event.  Team Radical West members who participated in the event were John Morris, Bob Majorino, James DiIorio, Glenn Scott, Elliott Brainard, and prospective Radical owner Russ Jeter.  Over 60 drivers attended this highly anticipated event.  Radical West crew members Marc Brewster, David Thompson and Todd Joyce were also on hand to assist the team. It was a perfect spring day in Willows, California, with great track conditions, and the team got up early to have breakfast and head down to the track.  First on the agenda was the driver’s meeting where Phillip instructed the participants on safe driving techniques and passing rules.  Phillip’s events are great for those who love to get a LOT of track time as there are only two run groups so everyone had a chance to practice their technique.

The participants drove a variety of cars - Porsches, NSX’s, Hondas, and even a Saleen Custom Built car - all driving together on the challenging Thunderhill track.   Several prospective Radical owners went for rides in the cars and they unanimously agreed that the Radical was the fastest thing on the track. All of the Radical West team members enjoyed their track day tremendously and we look forward to Phillip’s next event.

We would like to thank Phillip Holmes and his staff for a fabulous track day.
