| The Highly Anticipated Radical SR8 Launch |
|
|
| John Grant, Chairman of the MotorSports Association in England will officially unveil the Radical SR8 sports prototype at Autosport International on January 13th at 9.30 a.m.
The SR8 is powered by the all-new Powertec RPA 2.6-litre Macroblock V8 engine and six-speed transaxle, which will also be officially launched on the Powertec stand, adjacent to the Radical display. Both engine and car have successfully completed an arduous test program which comprised a series of comprehensive engine dyno tests, an in-house rolling road programme, wind tunnel evaluation and countless days of circuit testing at the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground. The SR8 chassis is an evolution of the SR3 Turbo, which bagged the production car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife last year. Much work has been carried out on the aerodynamic package. Tests in the MIRA wind tunnel have confirmed an increase in overall downforce of 2½ times that of the SR3. At the SR8’s maximum speed of 170mph the downforce developed is greater than the cars weight complete with a full tank of fuel and driver. At the heart of the SR8 is the unique Powertec RPA 2.6-litre Macroblock V8 engine and transaxle. In a standard state of tune the motor puts out an amazing 363bhp. An F1-style oil scavenge system and twin oil supply pumps ensures the engine’s reliability, even under high braking and cornering loads. Twin counter-rotating balance shafts, driven directly from the crankshaft, ensure that the engine runs extremely smoothly from tickover to its maximum of 10,500rpm. The running costs of the Powertec RPA motor look set to be equally impressive with the duration between rebuild expected to be over 30 racing hours.
With an overall weight of less than 600kg (1320 pounds), the SR8 is endowed with a power-to-weight ratio of 600bhp/ton. Couple this with the engine’s superb driver-friendly characteristics, a slick six-speed sequential transaxle and a price tag that starts at £50K, we think that the SR8 will be at the top of any discerning racers wish list. The SR8 is quoted as being the “greatest trackcar in creation, no question” by Autocar magazine in a recent test, while the SR4, which was awarded “Trackday Car of the Year 2004″ by Evo Magazine, is now even better, in it’s 2005 guise! Radical West Racing’s CEO, John Morris, will take delivery on the FIRST SR8 in the United States later this month. Radical West clients Roy Sciortino, Bob Majorino, and Glenn Scott have also placed deposits on the new SR8. |

| Kent Broussard, President of U.S. Racing Club, the official sponsor of the Radical Racing School, reports that enrollments for this year’s schools are brisk. “This summer we will be taking our Radicals on the road to Buttonwillow Raceway, Willow Springs International Raceway, and possibly Laguna Seca Raceway for “Arrive-and-Drives” where they will be available for rent rent either by the day or the weekend.” | ![]() |
| Our Arrive and Drive program will be available only to those who have graduated the Radical Racing School headquartered at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch. So, with only 6 cars available in the school, you should call early to assure yourself space in the school. Special Price for Radical West Newsletter readers: For anyone who signs up before January 31, 2005, we will discount the price of the school from $2,495 (for the weekday school) to $2,295 and will discount any WEEKEND school from $2,695 to $2,495. As always, the price for the Radical school includes everything from two nights at the fabulous Pahrump Nugget, catered lunch each day, helmets, gloves, suits, and more. Each school is limited to ONLY 6 students and there are always a minimum of 3 instructors per school. We also now feature “in-helmet” communications between the instuctors and the students, regardless of whether the instructor is in the car with the student or not (they stand at different corners on the track when not in the car and can speak to the drivers as the enter and exit the turns). No other open-cockpit school offers this feature, and it is a valuable learning tool to help improve your performance and speed.

Several leading journalists have tested the SR8 including Mark Hales, who managed to lap the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground in the wet, at 1:06 secs only a second shy of Radical’s test driver Michael Vergers best lap in the Radical SR3 Turbo, in the dry! Mark was highly impressed with the power and smoothness of the RPA motor and how sweet the six-speed sequential transaxle was. With only a few laps to familiarize himself with the car, he was very pleased at being able to match Vergers’ dry time in very difficult conditions.
