Member Weekend February 17-18
By Ellen Delmore, Country Club Coordinator
What a weekend we had last month, with over 20 members and a variety of their guests it was an exciting two days of driving.
Bruce Jameson and his entire family enjoyed their newly purchased Radicals and a few trips in the helicopter.
The buzz on the paddock was the anticipation of the Karnival of Karts Open House March 2. Members are so excited to try the new track. Member Mark McCarthy purchased a new kart to run on the day of the opening. We did have a bit of a kart teaser as we designated an hour and a half on the 1.5-mile track for members to experience the ride.
Co-owner John Morris was out with usual enthusiasm giving Radical and helicopter rides and giving tours of the “soon to be open” Club House. John is so generous with his time, if you’ve never been in a helicopter it is his great pleasure to take you up. Email Ellen and let her know when you’re coming out and if the helicopter and John are available, we’ll set it up!
There were also many other members that gave rides to guests. Kirk Shroyer gave rides and Mark McCarthy was showing guest Elizabeth Pickard around the track in his Lotus. Fred Chin was out with his entire Porsche crew, which made for some serious action. Dave Tweedlie, Jeff Shafer and a lot of other Radical enthusiasts enjoyed a fast day on the track. It was such a friendly, family atmosphere that weekend. As the weather gets warmer we look forward to seeing many of you and your family at the track. With so many events in the works it is impossible for you to miss an exciting weekend.
Check out all the exciting pictures, we hope you enjoyed yourself as much as the staff did.
Karnival of Karts - March 2
The Karnival of Karts Grand Opening event was a huge success, with over 50 karts participating in the festivities. Marc and Suzanne Segal, participants in the event, commented, “THANK YOU … for the Kart open house. The track is awesome. It is a perfect mix of high speed and technical all in one. The new sections blend perfectly with the road course. Everyone was very helpful. Having the owner of the track come over and welcome us along with Dave Petrie was great. A special thanks to Ken Northrup for his expertise, knowledge and passion for the sport!”
Ken Melgoza, Charter Member, prepared this short video to introduce our new Karting Program on our website. Thank you, Ken! Check out our new Kart Video!
Remember this is YOUR Club,
and we always appreciate your input on how we can serve you better. Thank you for your support, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ellen Delmore, your personal Country Club Representative, via email - ellen@springmountainmotorsports.com - or by phone TOLL FREE at 800.391.6891.
We are coming to a close on the 2007 Radical Cup with three drivers in contention for the championship! Rounds 12 & 13 were held at Thunderhill Raceway on October 27 & 28th. Please read the full report by Jeff Shafer.
TOTALLY RADICAL Ferrari
Rampage at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch
Members of Team Radical West
showed up in large numbers to enjoy the fun and festivities during the
Ferrari Scuderia Rampage Event at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch on
April 23-24, 2005. A record number of Radicals attended the
event including Radical Owners John Morris, Ken Melgoza,
Marc Futterman, Tim Day, Glenn Scott, Roy Sciortino, Allan Cislini,
Brian Johnson, and Cyrus Shargh. Radicals rented through
U.S. Racing Club’s
Arrive & Drive program were driven by Kent
Broussard, Hans Karge, Curt Berg, Brad Rambo, Todd Joyce, and Michael
Pederson.
The Radical grid before the big race
Radical staff members were
also on hand to provide Arrive and Drive services for our clients.
Staff members in attendance included James Vaughn, Marc Brewster, Josh Henely, Simon Shepard and Todd
Joyce, along with two visitors flown in from England - Gavin Nightingale and James Barwell - who
were brought over to help with the new SR8! We were
also honored to have one of the owners of Radical Motorsport,
Mick Hyde, in attendance at this event. Team members brought
their family and friends to watch the Radicals race, and to catch a
glimpse of some beautiful exotic sports cars such as Ferraris and
Lamborghinis in a rainbow of colors. The weather outlook included some
rain, but the track remained dry throughout the weekend. The Radical Race Event!
Race Report by James Vaughn, General ManagerThe Radical Race at the Scuderia
Rampage was run to packed grandstands with a full field of mixed
Radicals. The race was run at
which meant that practice
and qualifying had to be completed before lunch. The early morning
practice sessions were met with a cold track which caused a universal
lack of grip. Gary Wassell and
Phil Lamont from
Dunlop Racing were on hand to sort out the grip problems our
drivers were having. With Dunlop´s help all the Radicals in attendance
were able to capitalize on “Factory” knowledge in set up and race
preparation The SR8´s were being prepared by our esteemed colleagues
from England, Gavin Nightingale from Radical
UK, James Barwell from Powertech, our own Simon Shepard as well as Radical Guru Mick Hyde overseeing the operation. Qualifying went well as the Radicals worked their way through late
morning Ferrari traffic to finish in a predictable order.
John Morris used his knowledge of the track and driving
skills to take pole position in his SR3 turbo holding off the SR8´s of Roy Sciortino and
Marc Futterman. Brian Johnson secured the final V8 position
with a great qualifying run while debuting his brand new deep blue SR8.
The field of Radical
West SR3 drivers lined up next with a great
contingent of US Racing Club SR3´s rounding out the
field.
The start was a mixture of cunning and speed, as John brought the field
around slowly onto the front straight
Marc Futterman was looking for a
different gear in his SR8 just as the green flag dropped. Roy and Brian
took the opportunity and pounced on Marc to relegate him to 4th.
The rest of the field filed into turn 1 without mishap and the race was
on. John Morris kept his turbo out front with a great battle for second
between Roy and Brian. On lap 4 Roy´s SR8 encountered gearbox
problems, finishing him for the day. The SR3 battle raged on with Todd Joyce, an instructor at
SpringMountain, coming through the
field in a US Racing Club SR3. Ken Melgoza and
Glenn Scott
had a great race, looking for top honors in the SR3 group. Lap 7
brought out a Red flag as well as premature an end to the race when two
US Racing Clubs SR3´s went for the same piece of real estate in turn 1
with neither reaching their planned destination. The final outcome for
the weekend was John Morris, in his Turbo
holding off the SR8´s of Brian Johnson, who
drove a great debut race, and
Marc Futterman
taking final spot in the SR8 category. In the SR3 group it was Ken Melgoza taking first place with
Glenn Scott
securing second and Toddy Joyce filing out the
last podium position.
Final Race Results: SR3 Category: Ken Melgoza - 1st; Glenn Scott - 2nd;Todd
Joyce -
3rd.
SR8 Category:John Morris -
1st; Brian Johnson - 2nd; Marc Futterman - 3rd.John Morris, CEO of Radical West, gave
thrilling rides in his Radical, and the team members enjoyed their time
together in friendly but intense competition. Radical drivers and their
guests agreed that this event was a memorable experience for all
involved. We would like to thank the Ferrari Scuderia Rampage
for allowing us to participate with their group.

Larry Schnur & Paul
LaHaye Race at World-Famous SPA in Belgium
On April 30 and May 1, 2005, our own Team Radical West members Larry Schnur and Paul LaHaye
traveled halfway across the globe to the legendary
Spa Francorchamps Ractrack
in Spa, Belgium to race with the Radicals in their
annual pilgrimage to this track.
Teams from Sweden, Finland, Germany and the USA
joined the UK regulars creating a massive fifty-five car grid for the
two races run on Sunday. Racing against so many other Radicals must
have been an unforgettable experience for our Radical West Racing
teammates!
Larry Schnur & Paul LaHaye
at Laguna Seca in January 2005
Established in
1921, Spa Francorchamps enjoys an ideal spot in the picturesque green
Ardennes forest, and the track stretched in a hilly landscape but was
also made of numerous straight portions, particularly suitable to
achieve high speeds. With its location close to Spa, already famous on
the international scale for its hydrotherapy, the racetrack has all the
elements needed for fun, excitement and tourism.Paul LaHaye reported from Belgium, ” Larry and I had a great weekend
at SPA! The Radical Deutschland people were great and the track
was just fantastic. We both did well in the races without incident and
were lucky enough to race on a dry track with great weather and
had a fantastic time. Phil Abbott and Tim Greaves were very gracious
and helpful to both Larry and I.”
Larry
and Paul brought some nice west coast weather with them to Belgium… on
race day the Ardennes forest basked in sunshine with the temperature
reaching 28 degrees Celsius (that’s 82 degrees Fahrenheit for those of
us in the USA.)Read

Shop
Happenings
by James Vaughn, General Manager
April was a month of expansion for
Radical West Racing both in the shop as well as
transportation departments. The shop area at our headquarters in
Anaheim added 720 square feet of
mezzanine in the warehouse for parts and body storage, with vehicle
storage below. This gives us the much-needed ability to keep many more
parts as well as tires in stock, as well as a covered area for the cars
to be stored, to serve our valued clients better.
The Totter Transporter
In the transportation department we added a Totter transporter with a
44ft Gold Rush trailer that Marc Brewster and his guys will be
transforming into a fully-functional mechanical shop. The trailer is
currently set up with an engine hoist as well work benches and storage
spaces which will be put to good use. We were thrilled to acquire this
trailer, which will become a rolling shop, traveling with Team
Radical West to each race. In the trailer we will have
the ability to completely rebuild a car if necessary.
Each month we are going to offer a special deal on a new item or service
upgrade. There are so many gadgets and upgrades available to make the
Radicals faster, so we wanted to highlight one particular product and
offer it to you as a special deal for the month.
