TOTALLY RADICAL Ferrari
Rampage at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch

Members of Team Radical West
showed up in large numbers to enjoy the fun and festivities during the
Ferrari Scuderia Rampage Event at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch on
April 23-24, 2005.  A record number of Radicals attended the
event including Radical Owners John Morris, Ken Melgoza,
Marc Futterman, Tim Day, Glenn Scott, Roy Sciortino, Allan Cislini,
Brian Johnson, and Cyrus Shargh.
  Radicals rented through

U.S. Racing Club’s

Arrive & Drive program were driven by Kent
Broussard, Hans Karge, Curt Berg, Brad Rambo, Todd Joyce, and Michael
Pederson.

The Radical grid before the big race
Radical staff members were
also on hand to provide Arrive and Drive services for our clients.
Staff members in attendance included James
Vaughn, Marc Brewster, Josh Henely, Simon Shepard and Todd
Joyce
, along with two visitors flown in from England -
Gavin Nightingale and James Barwell - who
were brought over to help with the new SR8!  We were
also honored to have one of the owners of Radical Motorsport,
Mick Hyde
, in attendance at this event.  Team members brought
their family and friends to watch the Radicals race, and to catch a
glimpse of some beautiful exotic sports cars such as Ferraris and
Lamborghinis in a rainbow of colors.  The weather outlook included some
rain, but the track remained dry throughout the weekend.
The Radical Race Event!

Race Report by James Vaughn, General Manager
The Radical Race at the Scuderia
Rampage was run to packed grandstands with a full field of mixed
Radicals. The race was run at
which meant that practice
and qualifying had to be completed before lunch.  The early morning
practice sessions were met with a cold track which caused a universal
lack of grip. Gary Wassell and

Phil Lamont
from
Dunlop Racing
were on hand to sort out the grip problems our
drivers were having.  With Dunlop´s help all the Radicals in attendance
were able to capitalize on “Factory” knowledge in set up and race
preparation The SR8´s were being prepared by our esteemed colleagues
from England, Gavin Nightingale from Radical
UK, James Barwell from Powertech, our own
Simon Shepard as well as Radical Guru
Mick Hyde
overseeing the operation.
Qualifying went well as the Radicals worked their way through late
morning Ferrari traffic to finish in a predictable order.
John Morris
used his knowledge of the track and driving
skills to take pole position in his SR3 turbo holding off the SR8´s of
Roy Sciortino and

Marc Futterman
Brian Johnson secured the final V8 position
with a great qualifying run while debuting his brand new deep blue SR8.
The field of Radical

West SR3 drivers lined up next with a great
contingent of US Racing Club SR3´s rounding out the
field.

The start was a mixture of cunning and speed, as John brought the field
around slowly onto the front straight

Marc Futterman was looking for a
different gear in his SR8 just as the green flag dropped.  Roy and Brian
took the opportunity and pounced on Marc to relegate him to 4th
The rest of the field filed into turn 1 without mishap and the race was
on.  John Morris kept his turbo out front with a great battle for second
between Roy and Brian.  On lap 4

Roy
´s SR8 encountered gearbox
problems, finishing him for the day. The SR3 battle raged on with
Todd Joyce, an instructor at

Spring Mountain, coming through the
field in a US Racing Club SR3. Ken Melgoza and

Glenn Scott had a great race, looking for top honors in the SR3 group.  Lap 7
brought out a Red flag as well as premature an end to the race when two
US Racing Clubs SR3´s went for the same piece of real estate in turn 1
with neither reaching their planned destination.  The final outcome for
the weekend was John Morris, in his Turbo
holding off the SR8´s of Brian Johnson, who
drove a great debut race, and

Marc Futterman taking final spot in the SR8 category.  In the SR3 group it was
Ken Melgoza
taking first place with

Glenn Scott securing second and Toddy Joyce filing out the
last podium position.

Final Race Results:
SR3 Category
Ken Melgoza - 1st;
Glenn Scott
- 2nd; Todd
Joyce
-

3rd.
SR8 Category:
  John Morris -
1st
; Brian Johnson - 2nd;
Marc Futterman - 3rd.
John Morris, CEO of Radical West,  gave
thrilling rides in his Radical, and the team members enjoyed their time
together in friendly but intense competition.  Radical drivers and their
guests agreed that this event was a memorable experience for all
involved.  We would like to thank the Ferrari Scuderia Rampage
for allowing us to participate with their group.

Larry Schnur & Paul
LaHaye Race at World-Famous SPA in Belgium

On April 30 and May 1, 2005, our own Team Radical West members
Larry Schnur
and Paul LaHaye
traveled halfway across the globe to the legendary

Spa Francorchamps Ractrack

in Spa, Belgium to race with the Radicals in their
annual pilgrimage to this track.

Teams from Sweden, Finland, Germany and the USA
joined the UK regulars creating a massive fifty-five car grid for the
two races run on Sunday.  Racing against so many other Radicals must
have been an unforgettable experience for our Radical West Racing
teammates!

Larry Schnur & Paul LaHaye
at Laguna Seca in January 2005

Established in
1921, Spa Francorchamps enjoys an ideal spot in the picturesque green
Ardennes forest, and the track stretched in a hilly landscape but was
also made of numerous straight portions, particularly suitable to
achieve high speeds.  With its location close to Spa, already famous on
the international scale for its hydrotherapy, the racetrack has all the
elements needed for fun, excitement and tourism.Paul LaHaye reported from Belgium, ” Larry and I had a great weekend
at SPA!
The Radical
Deutschland people were great and the track
was just fantastic.  We both did well in the races without incident and
were lucky enough to race on a dry track with great weather and
had a fantastic time.  Phil Abbott and Tim Greaves were very gracious
and helpful to both Larry and I.”

Larry
and Paul brought some nice west coast weather with them to Belgium… on
race day the Ardennes forest basked in sunshine with the temperature
reaching 28 degrees Celsius (that’s 82 degrees Fahrenheit for those of
us in the USA.)

Shop
Happenings
by James Vaughn, General Manager

April was a month of expansion for
Radical West Racing
both in the shop as well as
transportation departments. The shop area at our headquarters in

Anaheim added 720 square feet of
mezzanine in the warehouse for parts and body storage, with vehicle
storage below. This gives us the much-needed ability to keep many more
parts as well as tires in stock, as well as a covered area for the cars
to be stored, to serve our valued clients better.

The Totter Transporter

In the transportation department we added a Totter transporter with a
44ft Gold Rush trailer that Marc Brewster and his guys will be
transforming into a fully-functional mechanical shop. The trailer is
currently set up with an engine hoist as well work benches and storage
spaces which will be put to good use.   We were thrilled to acquire this
trailer, which will become a rolling shop, traveling with Team
Radical West
to each race.  In the trailer we will have
the ability to completely rebuild a car if necessary.

Each month we are going to offer a special deal on a new item or service
upgrade.  There are so many gadgets and upgrades available to make the
Radicals faster, so we wanted to highlight one particular product and
offer it to you as a special deal for the month.

May’s Hot Deal:

B9004 20K Tachometer

The 2 5/8″ Digital Tachometer has the ability to display RPM values up
to 20,000 in 100 RPM increments. It also has the ability to drive an
external alarm, shift indicator at the redline limit that you set. The
Tachometer is designed with extra bright LED numbers as well as a dimmer
setting for night racing.

Team Radical West Member Matt Merrill Home Safely from Iraq

Radical West Racing
is happy to welcome back one of our original team members - Matt Merrill.  Matt is back home in San Diego after his recent deployment in Iraq, where he was stationed for about eight months.

Matt’s squadron deployed to Al Asad,
Iraq in August, 2004.  It was a former MiG fighter base in the western part of Iraq.  Matt’s squadron flew daily missions supporting the Marines and soldiers out on patrol throughout central and western Iraq.  During the battle for Fallujah they flew two or three times a day performing Close Air Support missions and employed the majority of their ordnance within 200-400 meters of the Marines on the ground.  Depending on the tactical situation they delivered GPS guided bombs, LASER guided bombs, LASER guided missiles, rockets, and 20 millimeter cannon rounds.

Matt Merrill at Willow Springs Raceway

Now that he’s back in the USA, Matt will be living in San Diego and will drive with Team Radical West at races and track events in his blue SR3. It’s great to be driving with Matt once again on the racetrack - welcome back to the team and thank you for your service to our country!

SR8 Wins Inaugural race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
(Reprinted from Radical Motorsport’s Website)

The banked speedway at
Las Vegas Motor Speedway was the exotic location for the SR8’s first race. Radical West brought along 16 cars to the three day event organized by the “Touring Car Racing Association “ and joined a whole host of Corvettes, Vipers, Ferraris and the Porsches from the POC.  Radical West boss, John Morris, was set to take the wheel of his recently delivered SR8.
John Morris & Radical West SR8
Unseasonably wet weather put a damper on the first couple of days, but come race day the Nevada sun shone through and a full day of track action was had by all.John Morris bedded in the SR8, in the first session.  Following a good check over by Lee Aubert, sent over from the UK especially for the occasion, John went out to do a timed lap.

Pole position by 3 seconds from a professionally driven Porsche GT3 RS Cup car was the result.  The remaining morning session was spent demonstrating the SR8 to potential customers.

The 17 lap race was an action packed affair with a grid full of Radicals, Porsches and Vipers doing battle.  Except for John Morris that is.  He just cruised into the distance and won the race by 25 seconds!

John was understandably impressed, “It’s everything Radical said it would be…… and then some!”

James Vaughn, Jr. appointed General Manager of Radical West Racing

John Morris, CEO of Radical West, Inc. recently announced the appointment of James Vaughn, Jr. as the our new General Manager.  Many of our clients already know James, as he has been a regular presence at our events.  James has been on board with Radical West for only a few months; however in his short tenure with the company he has demonstrated a solid work ethic, strong management skills and natural leadership abilities.  In his position, James is in charge of overseeing all of the day-to-day activities in the shop, including purchasing, transportation and logistics for all events, supervision of the mechanical staff, and management of our popular Arrive and Drive program.   James has a passion for everything that is related to motorsports, and truly enjoys his work at Radical West Racing.
As Radical Motorsport’s exclusive west-coast distributor, we have sold nearly 50 cars in a very short time.  Our rapid growth constitued the need for a ”take-charge” manager to ensure the continued organization and efficiency of the firm.  Since coming on board, James has been responsible for countless improvements to the shop, including hiring additional staff members, detailed record keeping and accountability, reduced costs for parts and other depreciable items, and much more.   All of this means we can provide better service to our valued clients, and we expect to make many more exciting announcements in the near future. For additional information or questions about shop operations, James can be reached by email at info@springmountainmotorsports.com or by phone (714)-779-0131.Congratulations James!

TOTALLY RADICAL News from the Factory
Recently Radical Motorsport UK released its 2005 price list to distributors.  Despite dramatic increases in steel and petroleum-based products such as fibre glass resin, the factory was able to keep base car price increases down to a few percentage points. Radical SR8
The SR8 with it’s Powertec RPA Macroblock V8, first launched in Indianapolis, is causing a major stir, with many distributors reporting a whole new level of interest.  John Morris of Radical West, in southern California, has sold six SR8s and lapped his circuit at
Spring Mountain Motorsport Ranch in Nevada, six seconds faster than any other car including the Radical SR3 Turbo.
Radical SR3 Improvements
Radical Motorsport has also sold their first SR3 with high downforce SR8 diffusers and bodywork which increases downforce by a factor of two and a half.   What this means to SR3 owners is higher speed through the corners and faster run times overall.  The “High Downforce Package” includes SR8 side pods and skirts, front diffuser and modified SR3 front-body section, SR8 rear undertray/venturi, front dive planes, bi-plane carbon rear wing, wing support frame and end plates, and SR8 wheel and tire upgrade.  This package is available for retrofitting through Radical West Racing headquarters.

And the future….Radical SR9
And it will not stop there.  This week Radical Motorsport’s factory appointed Peter Elleray who designed the Le Mans-winning Bentley Speed 8 car, to help design the next car, code-named the SR9.

Peter and chief designer Nick Walford are going to join forces to produce a Radical LMP2 sports prototype.  The SR9 will be eligible for the American Le Mans Series, the European Le Mans Endurance series (LMES) and ultimately the Le Mans 24-hour race.  The car will incorporate all the latest aerodynamics thinking from Peter Elleray, but will be based on a unique composite/spaceframe chassis, which will comply with the FIA’s latest safety regulations.  We are confident that Radicals proven ability to produce quality engineered cars at an affordable cost will result in the SR9 being a class-winning car at less than half the price of the competition.

At the heart of the SR9 will be a 3-litre derivative of the Powertec RPA V8 engine.  The Powertec RPD as it will be called, is predicted to produce over 530bhp.  The SR9 will be sold via selected distributors in Europe and America.  The car is expected to be completed at the back end of 2006, ready for the 2007 season.

Attending the event were the following Radical West Team Members….John Morris, Marc Futterman, Tim Day, Glenn Scott, Roy Sciortino, Larry Schnur, Don Simons, Jon Payne, Glenn Dulaine, Kent Broussard, Joe Schifini and Steve Nicklin. In addition, Radical West staff members were in attendance for track support, including James Vaughn, Jr., Marc Brewster, Josh Henley and Simon Shepard, along with Todd Joyce, Dave Roberts and Matt Long, who came over to assist with the Radicals from nearby Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch.   In addition, we were pleased to welcome Lee Aubert and Paul Dujon, who came all the way from England to view the premiere of the SR8 on the racetrack in Vegas.

The Radicals performed beautifully for the first time on this banked, high speed track, and the teammates participated in both the timed sessions and in the race groups.  The rain slowed down the action for the first two days of the weekend, but Sunday dawned clear and sunny and the racers were raring to go.  In the race event, Larry Schnur won the checkered flag, with Marc Futterman close behind in second position.  Everyone had a fantastic time and we’re all looking forward to our next event.

Radical West Racing Welcomes New Members to the Team
Radical West Racing is pleased to announce the addition of our three newest members of the team - Steve Nicklin, Joe Schifini and Craig Oka.   Steve, Joe and Craig will be participating in track events and races along with the rest of their teammates this season.  We look forward to spending time on the track with our latest Radical owners.   Welcome, Steve, Joe and Craig!
Steve NicklinSteve Nicklin hails from Las Vegas, Nevada.  Steve ran across some of the members of Team Radical West at a recent track event and was intrigued by the high performance and speed of the Radicals.  After completing the Radical Racing School at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch, Steve placed his order for a Radical SR3.  Steve collects exotic sports cars and enjoys spending time driving on the road and on the racetrack.   Pictured at left is Steve with his newly painted SR3 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in February 2005.

Joe Schifini is an Anesthesiologist in Las Vegas, specializing in Spinal Injections.  He grew up in Las Vegas, where he resides with his wife Jennifer and their three children.  He has always had a fascination with automobiles.   After Joe took the Radical School through U. S. Racing Club, he was ”hooked”.  He bought a Radical and put his BMW M3 up for sale.  Recently, he was asked to serve on the Board of Directors for U.S. Racing Club because of his passion for the sport and his love of these cars. He is looking forward to driving what many have called “the perfect track car”.

Craig Oka resides in Mission Viejo, California.  To support his racing habit he practices Architecture by day… and sometimes long nights.  His firm in Orange specializes in restaurants.  Clients include The Cheesecake Factory, Grand Lux Cafe, Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que, King’s Seafood Company, and Culinary Adventures. Craig started tracking cars in 2002 with his Viper GTS, Porsche Boxster S and Honda S2000.  He was first exposed to the Radical at a Tracquest event at Buttonwillow when Mark and DJ showed up with their little yellow bullets.  He drove a Radical for the first time at The Speed Ventures Radical Challenge.  Seeded last, Craig was able to place a respectable (for him) 10th place .  Ever since that day he was hooked and knew one day he’d buy a Radical.  That day was March 1, 2005.

Radical West Shop Happenings

by James Vaughn, Jr. - General Manager

XtremeX3 / D1

This last weekend XtremeX3 along with Import Racer magazine and Radical West teamed together to promote the New Fusion Video system in a professional D1 (drifting) car. Radical West attended the event with our 5-car trailer as a support vehicle and XtremeX3 flew an engineer in from their office in Virginia to install and monitor the system. The drift team C-Office had a rough weekend with clutch problems but we have great “Fusion Video” of the run they completed.  Import Racer magazine will be doing a 4-5 page article in the July issue on XtremeX3 with Radical West as the Dealer in Southern California.

Arrive and Drive Program

Recently Radical West Racing streamlined our Arrive and Drive program costs into easy “all-inclusive” pricing so our clients can more accurately plan their budget before each event weekend.  For additional information on our Arrive and Drive pricing and services, please visit our website.
Dunlop Tires

I am pleased to announce that as of March 6 we will have Dunlop SR3 tires in stock and for sale.  I cannot thank Phil Abbot  and Radical Motorsport UK enough for helping us with this logistics issue. The pricing is now displayed on our web site.  Any Radical owner wishing to run Dunlop tires should let the shop know as there is a Camber set-up change on the car when changing from Avon.

Racing Gear

Update: The Retail shop at Radical West Anaheim is progressing nicely. Our racing gear has been ordered and should be here in 2 weeks. Products we will be selling include:  Momo, Sparco, Stand 21, Redline fluids, VP Fuel, Lonachre, Earls Plumbing, Motul, XtremeX3 and Nordskog Guages just to name a few.

First Radical SR8 with V8 Engine Arrives in the USA !

February 2, 2005 was a momentous day at Radical West Racing….after the car had cleared through customs, our Radical West staff drove out to Los Angeles International Airport to pick up the newly flown-in Radical SR8 from British Airways cargo.  A crowd gathered in the warehouse as the Radical V8 powerhouse was gently removed from the trailer in perfect condition.  This is the day we were all waiting for….the first V8 Radical in the US has arrived and it is ready to race!

When we toured the factory in England last July 2003, the V8 was no more than a model engine on the conference room table.  After more than a year of development and testing, the V8 is not only a reality, it far exceeds the expectations of all who have been involved with the project.  Anticipating its popularity, orders were placed early with deposits for several of our key Arrive & Drive clients, and we have guaranteed production slots lined up for the first and second quarter of 2005.

The SR8 is quoted as being the “greatest trackcar in creation, no question” by Autocar magazine in a recent test.  Top journalist and racer Mark Hales tested the SR8 recently at the Bruntingthorpe Proving ground.  Mark who writes for various magazines was extremely impressed.

He managed to lap the Bruntingthorpe circuit in 1:06 secs in very slippery conditions, which is only a second shy of Radical’s tester Michael Vergers best lap ever in a SR3 Turbo, in the dry!

Mark enthused about the power and the smoothness of the Powertec RPA motor and was hugely impressed with the driveability and grip of the SR8 chassis.  In his article, which appears in Circuit Driver magazine this month, Mark writes:

“The SR8 attacks the track in a style that only a light car with a powerful engine can affect. The flat out twitch and slither in fourth which tugs your head in all directions as you sear onto the puddle-strewn main straight is the stuff of a proper prototype and yet once above tickover the engine is as refined as any in the best road cars.  Unlike the DFV which tickles every part of your anatomy, the SR8 feels utterly, completely smooth at all times.  In addition to the balancer shafts inside, the engine is rubber rather than solid mounted like its four cylinder brethren and it’s quiet too; the silencer had by then blown out most of its stuffing but the V8 howl was still sufficiently muted that the Bruntingnoise police felt no need to intervene. Not that you need to wind it past 10 in every gear unless you want to, because the spread of power is wide. The engine pulls smoothly form as little as 2000rpm, then grows ever stronger all the way through the range to 10.  Which, without wanting to damn with faint praise, is exactly what the standard Hayabusa does, and exactly what Radical is trying to harness in double measures.”
A few photos of the fabulous Radical SR8 - up close and personal

Last weekend, we are pleased to report, John Morris, our own Radical West CEO, during SR8 testing at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch, broke the track record at 1:35.5, and bested the previous SR3 Turbo lap time by 3.4 seconds!

Congratulations to our good friends at Radical Motorsport in Peterborough, for building a TOTALLY RADICAL new extreme sports car.  All who have driven it here in the States so far were, as you say in England, completely “gobsmacked.”

Radical West Racing Registers the FIRST Street Legal Radical in the U.S.

This could happen to you…. you’re driving down the street in your residential neighborhood or on your local freeway, or even in a restaurant parking lot.  Suddenly, you see it.  Your jaw drops, you stare, it’s nothing like you’ve ever seen before on the road…. it’s a TOTALLY AWESOME RADICAL and it’s driving on the STREETS!

We are pleased to announce that we obtained the first registration in the United States (this one was in Nevada) for a Radical to drive on the streets. Since we obtained a license to drive a Radical on the streets, crowds gather in awe every time we take it out into the community.    If we can do it - so can you!

The street legal Radical is equipped with lights, hand brake, horn, turn indicators, smooth edges on the wing, and special fasteners, ensuring a pleasant experience out on the road.  Regulations vary from state to state with regard to vehicle registration, and we were pleasantly surprised at how quickly and easily we were able to obtain the license through the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.  The Radical will proudly display personalized license plates RAD1 and can now be seen cruising throughout the region.

And the big question: “How does it drive?”  “Like a dream,” according to John Morris, who keeps it in his garage and cruises down to Newport Beach’s Crystal Cove on an occasional Saturday morning to show off the car and to enjoy the camaraderie with fellow exotic sports car drivers.  “The Street Version of the Radical is an amazingly smooth ride, with perfect control on the corners and especially on the freeways.  I’m going to have to watch myself carefully with this one or I’ll be heading to traffic court.”  As for the crowds that gather wherever he goes in the Radical, John says, “You just get used to it.”

For additional information on how you can own your own Street Legal Radical, please contact us TOLL FREE at 800-391-6891 or send us an email info@springmountainmotorsports.com

The Highly Anticipated Radical SR8 Launch

John Grant, Chairman of the MotorSports Association in England will officially unveil the Radical SR8 sports prototype at Autosport International on January 13th at 9.30 a.m.

The SR8 is powered by the all-new Powertec RPA 2.6-litre Macroblock V8 engine and six-speed transaxle, which will also be officially launched on the Powertec stand, adjacent to the Radical display.

Both engine and car have successfully completed an arduous test program which comprised a series of comprehensive engine dyno tests, an in-house rolling road programme, wind tunnel evaluation and countless days of circuit testing at the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground.

The SR8 chassis is an evolution of the SR3 Turbo, which bagged the production car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife last year.  Much work has been carried out on the aerodynamic package. Tests in the MIRA wind tunnel have confirmed an increase in overall downforce of 2½ times that of the SR3.  At the SR8’s maximum speed of 170mph the downforce developed is greater than the cars weight complete with a full tank of fuel and driver.

At the heart of the SR8 is the unique Powertec RPA 2.6-litre Macroblock V8 engine and transaxle.  In a standard state of tune the motor puts out an amazing 363bhp.  An F1-style oil scavenge system and twin oil supply pumps ensures the engine’s reliability, even under high braking and cornering loads.  Twin counter-rotating balance shafts, driven directly from the crankshaft, ensure that the engine runs extremely smoothly from tickover to its maximum of 10,500rpm.  The running costs of the Powertec RPA motor look set to be equally impressive with the duration between rebuild expected to be over 30 racing hours.

Several leading journalists have tested the SR8 including Mark Hales, who managed to lap the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground in the wet, at 1:06 secs only a second shy of Radical’s test driver Michael Vergers best lap in the Radical SR3 Turbo, in the dry!  Mark was highly impressed with the power and smoothness of the RPA motor and how sweet the six-speed sequential transaxle was. With only a few laps to familiarize himself with the car, he was very pleased at being able to match Vergers’ dry time in very difficult conditions.

With an overall weight of less than 600kg (1320 pounds), the SR8 is endowed with a power-to-weight ratio of 600bhp/ton.  Couple this with the engine’s superb driver-friendly characteristics, a slick six-speed sequential transaxle and a price tag that starts at £50K, we think that the SR8 will be at the top of any discerning racers wish list. The SR8 is quoted as being the “greatest trackcar in creation, no question” by Autocar magazine in a recent test, while the SR4, which was awarded “Trackday Car of the Year 2004″ by Evo Magazine, is now even better, in it’s 2005 guise!

Radical West Racing’s CEO, John Morris, will take delivery on the FIRST SR8 in the United States later this month.  Radical West clients Roy Sciortino, Bob Majorino, and Glenn Scott have also placed deposits on the new SR8.
