Hero Employee Saves Student's Life

Cooper Weyen Intervenes in Choking Incident

08 heroIt was a typical Sunday in the Clubhouse…driving school students were enjoying their lunch with kitchen staff, including Cooper Weyen, working in the bar area. Suddenly one of the students got food lodged in his airway and began to choke. Club member Larry Ricci and his friends were watching the game when they noticed Cooper grab the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and head to the struggling individual. Ricci, a Radiology Specialist at a University Hospital, was impressed by Cooper’s quick response and take-charge attitude, reporting “The elderly victim was large in stature and a much smaller person was trying to perform the Heimlich maneuver while this choking man was slumped over in his chair. Cooper took over and did not stop until he saved this man's life. It was a true act of heroism.”

Cooper Weyen is 23 years old and has worked at the Club for over two years, this being his first real job. His duties include dishes, setting up and tearing down meals, general kitchen cleanliness and organization. Cooper’s supervisor, Executive Chef Joe Verzani says “Cooper goes the extra step to make sure all duties are accomplished and all the guests are taken care of.” Now there’s an understatement! In addition, Cooper is always cheerful, has impressive sports knowledge and an ability to recall an abundance of stats.

09 memberAs Ricci points out, “It's a rare occurrence when someone actually has the opportunity to save a life and it's usually a very scary and high stressed situation, but Cooper took control and responded like it was a daily occurrence. There is no doubt in my mind this wouldn't have ended well if it wasn't for Cooper. This man was turning blue and was not far from going down.”

Cooper’s ability to remain calm and focused in an emergency saved the day, and we are thankful he is part of the Club Spring Mountain family.

Chevy Reveals the Mid-Engine Corvette Convertible

Feel the wind in your hair for under $70,000

10 c8 drivingThis week, Chevrolet revealed the C8 Convertible, the first with a power-folding hard top. According to Chevy, in addition to a cleaner look, the hard top will offer better aerodynamics than a cloth top would. With the spoiler, the coupe and convertible will have the same drag coefficient.

The top folds using six electric motors in 16 seconds and operates at speeds up to 30 mph, stowing under the cover and above the engine, preserving all of the coupe's available cargo space. Chevy's marketing department notes there will be space enough for two full-sized golf bags (or two race bags,) with additional storage at the front for an airline-spec carry-on and a laptop bag.

11 c8"We put the world on notice when we introduced the first mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette a few months ago, and now we’re raising the bar with the first-ever hardtop Corvette convertible,” said Brian Sweeney, Chevrolet U.S. vice president. “And the convertible will be priced only $7,500 more than entry 1LT Stingray coupe.”

Club Spring Mountain members will have the opportunity to view the convertible up close as we are slated to take delivery of four of these beauties at the facility. Production is slated to start later in the first quarter of 2020 at GM's Bowling Green, Kentucky facility. Photo by Jan Wagner.

16 kitchen staffMembers and guests have been raving about the quality of the meals coming from the kitchen this season. Our kitchen staff is second to none, and we would like to welcome newly promoted Executive Chef, Joe Verzani. Joe was born and raised here in Pahrump, and at the age of 17 started as a prep cook at Mountain Falls Grill Room. In 2012 he joined us as our lead cook, and was promoted to his current position this summer. When he’s not at the Club, Joe throws darts competitively and spends time with his 3 year old rescue dog, Lokey.

One of Joe’s dreams is to visit Italy so he can sample all of the local cuisine. Joe is well liked by both members and staff; he always remembers our Club members, their favorite sports to watch, favorite foods and more. We are lucky to have someone as kind and attentive as Joe Verzani in the Spring Mountain family and wish him the best in his new role.
