Spring Mountain Acquires 120 Acres for New Development

Track Extension Planned on the New Property

We are happy to report that Spring Mountain Motor Resort & Country Club has finalized the acquisition of a 120-acre parcel adjacent to the facility. The parcel, acquired from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was purchased by modified competitive sealed-bid sale. CEO and co-owner John Morris personally attended the sale at the Pahrump Field Office on Torrey Pines Drive in Las Vegas on Monday, May 7, 2012. With the addition of the new parcel, the total size of the facility will now include 313 acres.

We are planning to immediately improve the property, beginning with a 1.6-mile track extension on the new parcel, along with a .5-mile extension on the original 2.2-mile road course, at turn 4. The new track extension will be 50 feet wide and extremely smooth, due to a special emollient mixed with the asphalt to provide an excellent grip and smooth surface, with exceptional banking, including 102 feet of elevation change with a banked bowl. With this addition, we will be able to run 4 simultaneous track configurations and multiple long track variations for Country Club members, with the longest configuration totalling 6 miles in length.

“We’ve accelerated our development to realize our vision of Spring Mountain being a world-class motorsports facility,” says CEO John Morris. “The acquisition of the new parcel of land will allow us to immediately begin our track expansion and to build a lake for the enjoyment of the public. After the track addition is complete, Spring Mountain will be the second-longest race track in the world.”

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. In Fiscal Year 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

Protecting the Desert Tortoise

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

At Spring Mountain Motor Resort & Country Club we are committed to protecting the desert tortoise, which has recently become a threatened species. The desert tortoise is a large herbivore and the official reptile in the states of California and Nevada. No other tortoise in North America shares the extreme conditions of habitats occupied by the desert tortoise. The desert tortoise is able to live where ground temperatures may exceed 140 degrees F because of its ability to dig underground burrows to escape the heat. It is one of the most elusive inhabitants of the desert, spending up to 95% of its time underground to escape the heat of the summer and the cold of winter. They live in burrows which they dig, ranging from 3-6 feet deep. The tortoise will spend November through February in a torpid or dormant state in their underground burrows. The population of the desert tortoise has declined by 90 percent since the 1980s, and they are protected from threat of extinction by Federal law.

We recently completed a “Turtle Study’ on our newly acquired property according to the US Fish & Wildlife Service protocol, and the results have shown we are in a low impact zone with no tortoise sightings which is good news for future development.

Corvette News & Events

Congratulations to Marc Benson, who is the lucky winner of a 3-day Ron Fellows Performance Driving School. All Corvette owners who sign up to be part of the Corvette Corrals at selected American Le Mans Series races are eligible to win. Marc attended the Long Beach ALMS event last month.

The latest winner is Larry Mickey, who also won a 3-day Corvette school this past weekend in the Corvette Corral at the Laguna Seca ALMS event on May 11, 2012! Congratulations to both of our winners. We look forward to seeing you in class.
